How this page is built.

Plain HTML, CSS and JavaScript. No framework, no build step, no package manager, no third-party script.

What it loads

One stylesheet and six small JavaScript files, all served from this domain.
The two faces are system faces, so there is no webfont request: Iowan Old Style, Palatino or Georgia for the serif, and Avenir Next, Segoe UI or the system sans for everything else. Whichever your device already has is the one you see.
The only images are the site icon and the social preview card. Every graphic on the story is drawn by the browser.
What the site records, and what it does not, is set out on the privacy page.

Motion

The story moves with the scroll. It does not play on its own and it has no autoplaying video or audio.

If your device is set to reduce motion, the page gives you the finished state of every chapter instead, with every control still working. If JavaScript is off or a file fails to load, the page becomes an ordinary stacked document and still reads from top to bottom.

Accessibility

Text contrast is checked against WCAG AA on the cream ground. No colour is used at a reduced opacity for text. The smallest type on the site is 11px. Every control works from the keyboard.
